This short document looks at performance anxiety from a number of different angles, in order to better understand its manifestations, risk factors and impact, and thus intervene more effectively.

Performance anxiety can lead to dropping out of a program of study, or to a marked decline in academic motivation and commitment. However, the consequences are not limited to school. In some cases, performance anxiety can lead to compulsive behaviors (overtraining and excessive studying/preparation), insomnia, depression, eating disorders, self-mutilation, and even suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
