This article reports the results of a study measuring the extent of college students’ socio-emotional needs and their use of support services. A total of 12 208 cégépien.nes, enrolled in the fall semester 2014 and from eight establishments located in different regions of Quebec were surveyed.
The results indicate that
- Three quarters of respondents use such services for problems other than school-related ones.
- 17.4 of respondents felt very or very distressed and 35.1 % felt anxious, often or all the time. The main explanatory factors for distress and anxiety are family conflict, pressure to perform at school, bullying and suicidal thoughts.
- Prejudice against mental health appears to be a significant barrier to the use of support resources.
