This ORES synthesis article identifies six challenges related to the transition to higher education among the Indigenous students, as well as actions to overcome them. These elements are drawn from action research carried out in 5 post-secondary institutions in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region with 29 First Peoples students and 21 staff members.
The 6 challenges identified are:
- Personalized support right from the start
- Developing a sense of belonging
- Building confidence
- Enhancing the value of indigenous cultures
- Sustaining resources
- Ensuring mastery of acquired skills
