Guide: Experiences with Suicide in African, Caribbean, and Black Communities in Canada

The Mental Health Commission of Canada has produced this guide to better understand the suicide experience of African, Caribbean and Black (ACN) communities. The findings are drawn from a literature review and from the experiences of people with past and present experiential knowledge of suicide.

We present :

• the realities of people affected by suicide in ACN communities in Canada, in a broader context including stigma, systemic racism and systematic barriers to access.
• recommendations for policy makers, researchers and service providers to eliminate stigma, facilitate access to care and improve service delivery for people affected by suicide in ACN communities across Canada;
• suggestions for culturally adapted resources accessible to ACN community members concerned by suicide.
