A number of higher education establishments have introduced policies aimed at facilitating the reconciliation of personal life and studies for students in parenting or caregiving roles. Several policies are accompanied by tools for students, teaching and administrative staff to facilitate their application.

The Quebec Governmentdefines family caregivers as follows: ” a person who provides support to another person with a temporary or permanent physical, psychological, psychosocial or other disability, regardless of age or living situation, with whom he or she shares a dependency relationship, whether familial or otherwise (free translation). “About the parental status, it’s up to the institutions to define it, particularly with regard to the length of the pregnancy, the role of step-parent or whether or not the children live with the student.
