The purpose of the guide Pistes pour accueillir et accompagner la population étudiante des Premiers Peuples à l’universitéis to provide guidelines on how to better welcome and support First Peoples students at university The document has been created to support student services teams, but it may also be useful for all school staff. It is based on several references and on the experiences of staff supporting First Peoples students in the Université du Québec network. Indigenous students from the network also reviewed the proposed content.
The guide is based on seven approaches. For each, a number of actions are suggested and various examples of initiatives are put forward.
- A sensitive and committed university community
- A special welcome to encourage cultural reassurance and a sense of belonging to the university
- Significant physical and virtual spaces
- Psychosocial services specific to cultural and historical realities
- Assistance with financial aid services
- Specific learning support
- A dedicated team of professionals and a coherent approach throughout the establishment
