Sidewalk Talk is an active listening and caring program founded in the United States to strengthen social ties, combat isolation and promote mental health through a community-based approach. This type of program is part of a peer-support approach, where peers can set up in public spaces with identified chairs and offer free, non-judgmental listening to passers-by.
Its benefits :
- Promote mental health and reduce stigma by encouraging open and spontaneous conversations about emotions and well-being.
- Foster a culture of mutual support and active listening.
- Redirect people to appropriate resources as needed.
Integrating Sidewalk Talk into a higher education institution is possible by creating a Chapter, as Langara College initiated as part of a pilot project in 2024. According to this first experiment, the 57 mental health ambassadors, here called Listeners, carried out 13 events and welcomed a total of 201 people.
