John Abbott College’s SOAR (Success through Opportunities And Representation) program is a mentoring program launched in November 2023 thanks to a grant from Bell Cause for Cause. It aims to support the student population from racialized communities by pairing them with external mentors who share similar backgrounds. These mentors offer support and advice based on their own experiences, helping students to harness their strengths and thrive. The program’s objectives are preventive, focusing on the mental health of these students by fostering integration, a sense of belonging and increased confidence in their identity and ability to succeed.
