This page is intended for all practitioners working in different environments with clients at risk of suicide. It offers practical advice on how to support, develop and use a safety plan with a person in an intervention context (one-off intervention or clinical follow-up).
The safety plan is a personalized plan that a person develops in anticipation of difficult times. It is made up of steps to be followed when experiencing distress or thinking about suicide. Each step contains resources and strategies for reducing the intensity of suicidal thoughts and ensuring safety. The tool has been scientifically validated and is in line with best practices in suicide prevention. The version on this page is based on the Stanley-Brown 6-step model, and is also available in an interactive version.
