People may feel sad or unhappy when they experience a significant loss (e.g. a break-up, the death of a loved one), when they are adjusting (e.g. starting university), or when they are faced with an important choice (e.g. a career plan). However, if the sadness persists and general functioning is impaired, mood may deteriorate and slide into a state of depression.
