This series of 6 videos produced by Station SME was created to talk about mental health without taboos. Participants generously share their stories to inspire and give hope to those who are going through a difficult time during their studies at college or university.

Élisabeth

Élisabeth is a math student who lives with giftedness. On a daily basis, she deals with her hypersensitivity, strong emotions and not always easy social relationships. As panic attacks and suicidal thoughts often overtook her, she developed several strategies to keep moving forward and maintain hope. Elisabeth tells us how she managed to look after herself during the darker times.

Marc-Antoine

Marc-Antoine is a pharmacy student. He was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder while consulting a doctor for physical symptoms. He tells us how he managed to integrate this new reality into his life despite high expectations of himself. What’s more, he explains how accepting his vulnerability has enabled him to create stronger, truer relationships with others.

Andres

Andres moved to Montreal from his native Colombia to begin his master’s degree in urban planning. In trying to cope with the challenges of integrating a new culture, as well as reconciling his studies with his personal life, he says he has lost his balance. He tells us how the period of exhaustion he experienced, the loss of motivation and his sleeping difficulties carved out a place for themselves in his life, and how he got through these challenges by giving space back to his emotions and his social life.

Cassandra

Cassandra is a single mother, advocate and business student at HEC Montréal’s First Nations Leadership School. Through her experiences, she talks about her spirituality, intergenerational trauma and the importance of family. The processes of acceptance and sharing are at the heart of her ability to move forward in life and to be an inspiration to her children.

Catherine

Catherine is a distance-learning CEGEP student in the humanities. She talks about the manifestations of severe generalized anxiety disorder and borderline personality disorder, and their impact on her social and student life. She has been through many difficult times in recent years, and today brings a message of hope to all those who have to cope with multiple mental health diagnoses.

Émilie

Émilie is a new doctoral student in engineering. She showed great resilience during her university years, coping with severe financial stress, a history of violence and frequent panic attacks. She sought help and surrounded herself with the right people to develop the tools to get through her studies.
