The result of an international movement, the Okanagan Charter is a guide for higher education institutions wishing to promote the health and well-being of individuals, communities and environments. It is the result of the International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges / VII International Congress held in 2015 in British Columbia. Its guidelines were developed in collaboration with people in research, practice and administration, members of the student body and policy-makers, representing educational institutions and health organisations in 45 countries.
The Okanagan Charter invites signatory establishments to:
- Integrate a health component into their administrative, operational and academic practices.
- Develop and collaborate in health promotion efforts, both locally and globally.
