The National Standard of Canada for Mental-Health and Well-Being for Post-Secondary Students is a set of flexible, voluntary guidelines designed to help post-secondary institutions support the mental health and well-being of the student population. It has the following objectives:
- Raising awareness of mental health and reducing the stigma associated with mental illness
- Providing healthier and safer teaching environments
- Improving students’ chances of success and personal development
- Promoting students’ life skills and resilience in their studies, at work and in their daily lives
Additional tools
Several tools have been developed to guide institutions in implementing the Standard.
This starter kit is designed to help post-secondary institutions in Canada implement the National Standard of Canada on Mental Health and Well-being for Post-secondary Students.
The Campus mental health action tracker is designed to support institutions in adopting the Standard on Postsecondary Student Mental Health. It is a practical tool for collaboratively documenting and evaluating the implementation of the Standard.
The document Unlocking the Standard: Supporting Mental Health in Post‑Secondary Education presents the findings that four higher education institutions have drawn from their experience implementing the Standard.
The Centre for Innovation in Campus Mental Health has prepared a toolkit to help understand the various components of the Standard and support its implementation.
